Five for Friday: Best Bets for September 23

Sometimes, you know it’s just not your day. That was how yesterday turned out for me, as two of my aggressive parlay plays for +1200 turned into solid performances from Andorra and the Faroe Islands. But the third game was the one I had the most confidence in…and Slovakia managed a home loss to Azerbaijan.

I’ve been through a lot as a bettor and a Slovakia supporter, but it doesn’t get much worse than that. Azerbaijan is a terrible side…and yet, my Slovaks found a way to get beat and ruin my parlay. The other two plays went no better, as Denmark couldn’t hold a draw and Virginia Tech brought nothing resembling a running game to face West Virginia.

Luckily, today has given me one win with Georgia soccer and we’ve got college football and USL plays tonight. Here we go.

LOUISVILLE CITY AND BTTS, +220

This is first vs. second in the USL’s Eastern Conference, and LouCity should be able to emerge victorious here. They’re playing at home, and both sides have found the net in four consecutive meetings between the teams. The past two meetings have been Louisville victories, and I think they all but wrap up the top seed here.

SYRACUSE -9.5, -110

The Orange appear legitimate as far as ACC football goes. Virginia, not so much. The Cavaliers struggled past Old Dominion at home and got drilled at Illinois while Syracuse handled Purdue at home. Sure, Virginia traveled to Champaign instead of hosting Illinois, but the Orange own a win over a much better team than anyone Virginia has seen. Throw in that the Cavaliers can’t run the ball at all and this looks like it sets up well for Syracuse.

NEVADA +24.5, -110

This looks a little too much of a spread for Air Force to cover. Nevada’s weakness is its terrible pass defense, not its run defense. The Wolf Pack actually have played decent against the run, but Incarnate Word shredded their secondary for 55 points. Air Force doesn’t like to take to the skies; it’s a triple option team that’s going to try to win with long drives and time of possession. That’s great for the Falcons’ efforts to win the game, but it’s not so good for covering a spread. Nevada can hang around here.

TAMPA BAY ROWDIES ML, -140

The Rowdies come in off two losses, but those both came away from Al Lang Stadium. Tampa Bay plays much differently at home, winning seven of its past eight and drawing the other in St. Petersburg. Plus, the pressure is on for the Rowdies. With Louisville and Memphis squaring off, Tampa Bay can close to within a point of second place if it gets three points here and Louisville takes care of Memphis. But if the Rowdies fall, they can slip to fifth place, which would mean starting the playoffs on the road. Their history shows they don’t want that.

BOISE STATE -16.5, -110

UTEP did great for me last year, but the Miners are not the same team in 2022. Boise State also has no covers, but the Broncos have come close twice and should be able to dominate UTEP’s weak run defense. This should be the game where Boise comes out strong and cruises home.
