Pace’s Week Three CFB Prop Bets: Time to Target the Wide Receivers

I’m currently writing this blog in the car while @PumbaCakes drives like a maniac down some two lane road in Nebraska. The speed limit says 60, he has to be going at least 80. But it’s because we have places to get to.

We’ve been planning this trip to Lincoln, Neb., for the Oklahoma vs. Nebraska game for the last handful of months and it’s finally go time. The only beef I have with the trip is that Scott Frost didn’t make it one more game.

Last week, we were a bit MIA as I was trying to channel my inner John Wayne in Wyoming. I’m not a cowboy. I need internet.

But we are back this week with two college football prop bets. We started off the season with a sweet 5-1 record but have lost our last three prop bets. The confidence is still high (always is) and this week we are targeting two wideouts.

YTD Prop Bet Record: 5-4 (+0.39 units)

  • Chase Brown OVER 101.5 rushing yards (+1 unit)
  • Re’Mahn Davis OVER 69.5 rushing yards (+1 unit)
  • Brennan Presley OVER 51.5 receiving yards (+1 unit)
  • Broc Thompson UNDER 66.5 receiving yards (+1 unit)
  • Tre Harris OVER 48.5 receiving yards (-1.14 units)
  • Chase Brown (Illinois) OVER 86.5 rushing yards (+1 unit)
  • Zack Kuntz (Old Dominion) OVER 48.5 receiving yards (-1.18 units)
  • Jayden Reed (Michigan State) OVER 83.5 receiving yards (-1.14 units)
  • Quentin Johnston (TCU) OVER 85.5 receiving yards (-1.15 units)

Rashee Rice OVER 89.5 receiving yards (-114)
Rashee Rice has been on a mission through the first two games of his senior season. SMU hasn’t played great teams to start 2022 but they’ve done what they were supposed to do and are 2-0 with wins over Lamar and North Texas. Rice has caught 17 passes for 298 yards and three scores for an average of 17.5 yards per reception.

He’s racked up over 650 receiving yards in 2021 and 2022 and should be a matchup nightmare for Maryland on Saturday. The Terps are favored by 3-points at home and have wins over Buffalo and Charlotte. The defense has given up 31 points through two games but they’ve allowed an average of 226 passing yards per contest.

That’s good news for Rice and his YEAR quarterback Tanner Mordecai. Mordecai is 41-of-63 this season and has thrown for 644 yards with a 7-1 touchdown/interception ratio. His seven passing touchdowns are tied for fifth best in college football.

Mordecai and Rice seem to be on the same page this season and I think that trend continues on the road against Maryland.

Charlie Jones (Purdue) UNDER 93.5 receiving yards (-114)
Charlie Jones has already caught the same amount of catches he had last year (21) through two games this season. Jones is averaging 13.6 yards per reception and has four touchdowns and 286 total receiving yards.

We haven’t taken a wide receiver under this season because it’s never fun to against players but I think this 93.5 number is too high for Jones against an a Syracuse team that has allowed just 151 passing yards through two games.

Jones caught 12 passes in Purdue’s season-opening 35-31 loss to Penn State for 153 yards and followed that up with a three touchdown performance against Indiana State. He caught nine passes for 133 yards last week against the Sycamores.

Syracuse held UConn quarterbacks Zion Turner and Cale Millen to 105 passing yards last week and opened the 2022 against Malik Cunningham. Cunningham only finished with 152 passing yards on a 16-for-22 night.

The Orange’s secondary have been tagged as a top unit in the nation that features a dynamic duo in Garrett Williams and Duce Chestnut. As a freshman, Chestnut was one of the top interception leaders in the ACC last season.

Jones should get his looks but I think this number is too high against a Syracuse secondary that’ll be hungry to get to work on Saturday.
