Sunday Spreads: Best Bets for May 29

Saturday was another successful day overall, as the Rangers controlled from start to finish against Carolina, Miami bossed its match with Portland and Toronto FC came back from the dead against Chicago to pick up another important result. Of course, we had a couple misses when Liverpool hit everything but the net and New Orleans gave away a touchdown to Michigan in the fourth quarter that landed them in overtime and cost me the cover. But any time you’re winning more than you’re losing, it’s a good day, especially if you have some plus-money plays in there.

We’ve got a few good opportunities Sunday; here are my best bets for May 29.

L.A. GALAXY -0.5, -120

The bloom is off the rose for Austin. The Oaks were playing a soft schedule to open up the season and have failed to win in three of their past four matches. I think the Galaxy can control this match after winning by 1-0 last month in Texas, and I think they’ll get an early goal to put themselves on the front foot here.

ROCKIES +0.5 F5, -135

I could take Colorado plus 1.5 for the full game, but I’d rather go for the first five and just focus on Josiah Gray’s poor performances on the mound for the Nationals. Gray has given up at least three runs in four consecutive starts, and a repeat should be enough to see the Rockies battle Washington to at least a draw through five innings.

STALLIONS -12, -110

This is the biggest spread that we’ve seen in the USFL all year, but it makes sense here. Pittsburgh has been very poor all season long, while Birmingham is unbeaten and has basically done whatever it’s wanted to do this season. I don’t think the Stallions are going to get complacent here, given that a win means they’d be in the playoffs and could dictate whether they rest players or not (and whether they show likely semifinal opponent New Orleans anything) over the final three weeks. They should take care of business here.

STARS -3, -110

Nobody suffered more than Houston when Michigan fell to New Orleans in overtime on Saturday, and that includes Michigan itself, as the Gamblers were officially eliminated from the USFL playoff race with the Breakers’ victory. Houston was already having problems when it had something on the line; now the Gamblers are out of the running and facing a Philadelphia team that’s moving the ball well and can put itself on the doorstep. With a win here, Philadelphia would clinch a playoff spot with either one more win or one more loss each from Michigan and Pittsburgh. The Stars should handle the doomed Gamblers.

SOUNDERS -1, +105

Should I have created the S parlay? Charlotte’s coming to the Northwest on short rest after playing in the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, and Seattle has actually been resting for a change. The Sounders have a big edge with the Royals traveling from one coast to the other, and I think that will leave Charlotte unable to defend the Seattle attack. I think this becomes a comfortable win for the Sounders.
